My name is Chelsea Woodbridge and I have worked as a Veterinary Nurse for last six years. I enjoy keeping fit and active in the great outdoors and at the gym and CrossFit.



What inspired me to start hunting:

I first became interested in hunting after tagging along with my husband on many of his hunts.  I had obtained a degree in animal welfare years before, during which I became fully aware of the less-than-ideal conditions many animals for consumption were reared and slaughtered in.  I decided that I only wanted to eat meat sourced from the wild where the animals were free to roam and live the life they should.  I have attained a great respect for meat through the hard work that is put in to a successful hunt. 



What I enjoy about the outdoors:

 I enjoy the thrill and experience each hunt brings as there are always lessons to be learned.  Sometimes you make mistakes, but this just means you can develop as a hunter.  I love having the privilege of hunting in New Zealand, as I can unwind in the vast beauty New Zealand’s landscapes brings.  I love how hunting also encourages friendships to grow in your own personal hunting bubble.  The long weekend hunting trips with friends, sitting around camp talking about your hunts that day, learning from each other’s experiences and the inside jokes that are made. 

Favourite piece of clothing:

I love my Pro Hunt Air Tech Long Sleeve Top.  I often get quite hot hunting, so the lightweight, breathable fabric on this top is ideal for me.  It also has mesh vents under the armpits to help with ventilation.  The fabric is soft to touch and silent which means stalking in close to animals is made much easier.  As I often bow hunt, I like having my arms covered to minimize the likelihood of being noticed when stalking in to close range, so this top is perfect for that. 

 Advice for new hunters:

Definitely give it a go.  You won’t know if it’s for you unless you try!  If you have mates or family members that hunt, ask to go out on some hunts with them.  If you don’t know anyone who hunts, there are plenty of Facebook pages that could help you find your way into hunting.  When you decide if hunting is for you, I suggest speaking to experts to find the best type of rifle or bow for you.



Best hunting experience:

A few years ago, my husband and I were hunting Fallow in Whanganuni with a couple of friends. I had never seen Fallow deer before, so just seeing them in their natural habitat was amazing!  As we only had a day and a half, and because Jay and Adam had both shot plenty of deer before, they encouraged us girls to be the first shooters.  After a bit of a hike, we saw two Fallow grazing on the opposite cliff face.  They were ranged at 182 meters.   I was confident I could successfully take the shot, so decided to give it a go.  Both myself and our friend Monica lined up a Fallow each, and we shot at the same time.  It was a perfect kill shot, making this spiker my first ever deer I had successfully hunted.  I also got to see my husband take a Fallow with the bow for the first time.  This is still one of my most favourite hunts and one I’ll never forget.

Smokey Venison Sloppy Joes



1.5kg venison (large chunks)

1 large onion, chopped

150gm bacon

½ cup brown sugar

¼ cup wine vinegar

1 cup Glasseye Creek Wild Meat Sauce

2 Tblsp minced garlic

1 Tblsp ground cumin

1 tsp chilli powder

Salt and Pepper to taste



  1. Place bacon in a large, deep skillet.  Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown.  Remove from skillet, crumble/dice and set aside.  In small batches, quickly brown venison chunks in bacon grease for flavour and set aside. 
  2. Put onion, sugar, Glasseye Creek Wild Meat Sauce, vinegar, cumin, chilli powder, garlic, salt and pepper in a slow cooker and mix well.  Add bacon and venison and stir together. 
  3. Cook for a minimum of 8 hours on Low setting.  Use a fork to separate the meat into a thick and rich Sloppy Joe feast.  Add seasoning to taste and more Glasseye Creek Wild Meat Sauce if desired. 
  4. Serve with fresh buttered buns (not Margarine) and coleslaw and enjoy with a beer!
